Phnom Veal Thom Wilderness Trek

Extended wilderness trek to a natural, montane grassland with an indigenous guide, village homestay.

Itinerary

Day 1: Purchase food in the Banlung market with your park ranger guide; depart Banlung at approximately 9.30am by motor bike or car (as who offer); arrive Taveng district at 11.00am and proceed by boat down the Se San river to a Brau village (Phum Phayang /Tompourn Rieng Touch / Sieng Say); spend the afternoon and night in the village and enjoy a jar of local rice wine with your homestay family.

Timings: Banlung to Taveng district town by moto takes approx. 1.5hrs; Taveng to the Brau village by river boat approx. 30 minutes plus time to organize the boat.

Day 2 - 8: Depart the village in the morning with your park ranger guide, indigenous guide and porters to Phnom Veal Thom, natural montane grassland deep in the park. Trek for 2-3 days to reach the grassland. Spend 1-2 nights on the grassland, depending on progress made. Look out for wildlife in the early mornings and evenings - sambar deer, gibbons, Douc Langurs, wild pig, Great Hornbills, muntjacdeer and bear species inhabit this area. Lucky visitors may glimpse a Gaur - an endangered wild cattle species. Return from the grassland on the same trek and spend the seventh night in the Brau village of Phum Ko Pong on the banks of the SeSan River or in the forest as dependent on progress made. On day 8 return by boat up the Se San river to Taveng. Have lunch in Taveng and return to Banlung by motorbike or car, arriving in the afternoon.
This trek ascends gradually through relatively undisturbed, semi evergreen forest for about 500m, up river valleys and over small mountains to reach the grassland. It requires a relatively high level of fitness.

Timings: 2-3 days to the grassland and 2-3 days return to the village; approx. 30 min by boat to
 the first Brau village and 3-4hrs return boat journey from Phum Ko Pong at the end of the trip.

Note: For small parties or when the boat is unavailable it is possible to travel by motorbike to Phum Phayang or Phum Sieng Say from Taveng and return by motorbike from the same village at the end of the trek. The trip takes approx. 30min one way.

Itinerary

Day 1: Depart Balung at approximately 9:00am by moto bike or car; arrive Taveng district 10:30am proceed to boat pier on the Se San river; travel by boat up the Se San and scenic O’Tabok river to Phum Yorn village – an ethic Brau village on the edge of the park; stop for a while at Phum Yorn village to make hospitality with Brau minority and your guide find out a indigenous guide or prepared utensil to the jungle camping.

Timing: Banlung to Taveng district town take approximately 1.5hrs (2hrs in wet season); Taveng to Phum Yorn by river boat take approximately 2.5hrs in the dry season, walk through the jungle approximately 2hurs, camping nearby O’Tabok river.

Day 2: After Local breakfastwalk from the Brau village adjacent of the park via a section of the Ho Chi Minh trail,look out of wildlife,typical ofbamboo forest, mountain hiking,Yak kong kreav mountain birdwatching, viewing point, freshcool air and loop back through Buffer zone to the village.                                                                                                                     
 Timing: Approx. 2hurs from the camp site to the Yak Kong Kreav Mountain, approx.2.5hurs to the village, approx.1.5hurs boat down back to the Taveng District, arriving Banlung about 4 or 5pm.

Itinerary

Day 1: Purchase food in the Balung Market with your park ranger guide; depart Balung at approximately9:30am by motor bike or car; arrive Taveng district 11:00am proceed to boat pier on the Se San river; travel by boat up the Se San and scenic O’Tabok rive to Phum Yorn village – an on the edge of the park; spend the afternoon and night with a family in Phum Yorn village.

Timings: Banlung to Taveng district town take approximately 1.5hrs in dry season (2hrs in wet season);Taveng to Phum Yorn by river boat take approximately 2.5hrs in the dry season.

Day 2: After local breakfast walks from the village via the plateaus of tall trees, look out of wildlife along the trail, type of bamboo forest, via a part of Ho Chi Minh trail, O’Tabok river swimming, mountain hiking, viewing point over the national park, a small historic grassland, 25 meters high waterfall (Yak Kae Waterfall).

Timings: Approx. 4hurs from the village to the lunch place beside the small river _ about 3hours more to the waterfall.

Day 3: Wake to the calls or listens of gibbons before returning the village – trek out of the national park via the National Park Buffer Zone_ Enjoy Brau hospitality and a jar of rice wine _Have lunch with a local family before taking a motor boat back to Taveng and onto Banlung by motor bike or car, arriving in the early evening.                         

Timings: Approx. 4hours from camp site to the river, about 4pm or 5pm arrive Banlung.
